European Year Against Pain
Since 2001, European Pain Federation EFIC® has held a centrally coordinated event named ‘The European Week Against Pain’ (EWAP). The 1st European Week against Pain was launched at the European Parliament.
From 2012 onwards, the event was changed to the ‘European Year Against Pain’ (EYAP) with a centrally coordinated annual theme. National Chapters hold activities to gain attention amongst the medical community, the general public, and local media. European Pain Federation EFIC® provides briefing packs and factsheets on the designated theme, so that a general message can be unified across Europe.
Years’ Themes 2013-2017
2018’s theme is Excellence in Pain Education.
There continues to be a gap between what we know about effective pain management and the delivery of effective patient care. Poor understanding of pain is prevalent among policy makers, caregivers, the lay public as well as for patients themselves. The existence of educational gaps allows for misunderstandings to develop and inappropriate treatments to become routine and entrenched.
Now is the time to bring pain education into the spotlight and help bridge the gap between knowledge and practice.
The Global Year for Excellence in Pain Education strives to address these gaps and will focus on four key areas:
- Public and Government Education
- Patient Education
- Professional Education
- Pain Education Research
Our work to promote Pain Education
European Pain Federation EFIC® works to promote Excellence in Pain Education in Europe
The European Pain Federation EFIC®, composed of the 37 National chapters of the International Association for the Study of Pain, supports the vision and aims of the Global Year for Excellence in Pain Education. Leveraging our ongoing commitment to foster pain education in Europe, we will continue working toward bridging the knowledge gap in pain through our education and awareness activities.
The EFIC Education Platform will feature the most comprehensive selection of lectures and presentations recorded at congresses and pain schools hosted by the European Pain Federation EFIC.
Every week it will bring you a selection of previously unavailable scientific and educational content as a learning resource.
Over the coming months the EFIC Education Library will become your go-to source for high quality independent content, selected and delivered by thought leaders from the world of pain medicine.
The Pain Schools are courses aimed at young (preferably under 45 years) European medical doctors and allied health professionals who are interested in further developing their knowledge and expertise in the field of pain management. The courses run for 4-5 days and include an evidence-based approach to the assessment, diagnosis and comprehensive management of patients with chronic pain. To be eligible to apply for a grant to attend a Pain School you need to be a European Pain Federation EFIC® Chapter Member.
Applications for pain schools are now over, we thank all the applicants for their enthusiasm and we will be in contact with our chapters to let them know about the successful applicants shortly.
Upcoming Pain Schools:
|2-7 September 2018||Klagenfurt|
|8-11 October 2018||Bergamo|
|16-19 October 2018||Liverpool – Cancer Pain School|
Curricula and Exams
The European Pain Federation EFIC® has developed an undergraduate core curriculum for medical students called “The Pain Management Core Curriculum for European Medical Schools” and two core curricula on pain for postgraduate learning: “The European Pain Federation EFIC Pain Curriculum for the European Diploma in Pain Medicine” and the “The European Pain Federation EFIC Pain Curriculum for the European Diploma in Pain Physiotherapy“. Knowledge of these core curricula is evaluated through two examinations, respectively the Examination for the European Diploma in Pain Medicine (EDPM) and the Examination for the European Diploma in Pain Physiotherapy (EDPP).
The upcoming dates of the EDPM and EDPP exams are 20-21 April 2018, Leuven, Belgium. Registration for both exams is open until 5 April 2018!
The European Pain Federation EFIC® Fellowship is an individual grant for medical doctors to support training in the diagnosis, treatment and management of pain related conditions. The training takes place for an agreed period of time in an approved center of excellence. The purpose of the fellowship is to allow the trainee to introduce the knowledge acquired during their training into their everyday clinical pain practice. It is expected that the applicant is already involved in the field of pain medicine, or has a clear pathway to become a specialist in pain medicine. The fellowship is not intended to supplement or extend the applicant’s current training.
The applicant must have been a member of a European Pain Federation EFIC® Chapter for at least one year before applying. Each European Pain Federation EFIC® Chapter can have a maximum of two grants approved annually. The maximum length of a fellowship is 10 weeks.
Deadline for European Pain Federation EFIC® Fellowships in 2019: 1 June 2018
