The World Day for Physical Activity is observed annually by the World Health Organization and the International Society for Physical Activity and Health on 6 April. The aim of the day is to promote the positive role sport and physical activity can play in our lives. The theme of the 2022 Day is ‘Securing a Sustainable and Peaceful Future for All: The Contribution of Sport’.

Physical activity and exercise plays a very important role in the management of many chronic pain conditions (e.g. low back pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis). Regular exercise has been shown to do the following:

  • Reduce muscle tension and nervous system sensitivity, by activating endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers
  • Improve sleep quality
  • Reduce fatigue, tiredness and increases energy levels
  • Increase muscle strength, flexibility, and aerobic fitness
  • Prevent and reduce stress and anxiety
  • Help with weight control when supplemented with a healthy diet.

Therefore, engaging in physical activity and exercise can help people in pain improve their pain intensity, disability levels, and overall quality of life.

The European Pain Federation’s ‘On The Move’ campaign has extensive resources (available in 11 languages) to help people participate in more exercise/physical activity.
