The theme chosen for #EFIC2025, “Comorbidity of chronic pain and mental health disorders: Breaking the cycle,” holds significant importance considering the recent announcement of the EU Mental Health Strategy in 2023.  This interdisciplinary theme will be pertinent to both researchers and clinicians, engage medical and non-medical healthcare professionals and span a wide range of areas of interest. Chronic pain and mental health disorders (such as major depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder) are interconnected public health concerns with growing prevalence that often coexist and exacerbate each other, highlighting the need for shared policy goals.

The biopsychosocial approach has transformed the management of chronic pain, emphasizing the necessity for a comprehensive and integrated understanding of biological, psychological, and social factors. Chronic pain and mental health disorders have similar socioeconomic impacts and are equally influenced by work environments, calling for healthier and more supportive workplaces to prevent both conditions. Identifying common risk factors and shared neurobiological mechanisms could aid early intervention and prevention efforts. Translational research is required to assess pain-related affective and cognitive states, such as behavioral measures of depression and anxiety.

Precision medicine, informed by biomarkers, is proposed for both chronic pain and mental health disorders to tailor treatment strategies. Substance-use disorders are common among patients with both conditions. Patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) and patient-reported experiences (PREMs) are recognized as crucial tools for evaluating treatment effects. Stigmatization adds to the burden of both conditions, emphasizing the need to reduce it for improved access to care.

Chronic pain and mental health issues affect individuals of all ages, including the elderly and children, requiring tailored care. Additionally, the intersection of cancer-related pain and mental health will receive specific focus. #EFIC2025 will offer new perspectives on chronic pain management, promoting a comprehensive and holistic approach to addressing the complex relationship between chronic pain and mental health disorders.
