World Sleep Day 2021 or 2022 is an annual event organized by the World Sleep Society. It encourages: 1. An understanding and awareness of the importance of sleep in overall health, 2. the recognition of and current research on the burden of sleep disorders and sleep disruption, and 3. efforts for the prevention and management of sleep disorders and/or sleep disruptions. The 2022 Slogan is Quality Sleep, Sound Mind, Happy World.

Sleep problems constitute a global epidemic that threatens health and quality of life for up to 45% of the world’s population. There is strong evidence that there is a dynamic interplay between sleep and pain. Poor sleep can be associated with the development or worsening of pain, or having pain can be associated with developing poor sleep.

Better understanding of sleep conditions and more research into the area will help both pain research and pain management efforts. In particular, we urgently need to

  1. Understand the purpose of sleep and by what mechanisms does poor sleep lead to chronic pain
  2. Better assess sleep problems and identify treatment targets
  3. Develop better treatments for sleep and chronic pain

The #EFIC2022 Congress puts sleep in the spotlight, by having several presentations on sleep-pain research:
