EFIC is delighted to announce Esther Pogatzki-Zahn as the Chair of the Scientific Programme Committee for the EFIC Congress 2023 – Pain in Europe XIII in Budapest, Hungary.
Esther Pogatzki-Zahn is an anesthesiologist, pain specialist and professor in the Department of Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine, University Hospital Muenster, Germany. Her main clinical work is pain management including acute, transition from acute to chronic pain and palliative care. Furthermore, she has been trained as a PhD in neuroscience (1998-2002) in the US (Baltimore and Iowa City) and leads (since 2004) the “Translational Pain Research group” at the University of Muenster. Her research group is aiming to provide insight into the neuropathology of incisional, chronic inflammatory, neuropathic and cancer related pain by using in-vivo behavioral, electrophysiological, omics, fMRI and molecular methods and techniques. In addition, she is working with human surrogate models of postoperative and neuropathic pain and uses quantitative sensory testing (QST), imaging techniques and omics to explore acute and chronic pain in human volunteers and patients. Finally, she performs clinical studies and is involved as a PI in a number of international multicenter projects like Pain-Out, a large international acute pain registry and IMI-PainCare, an EU funded large interdisciplinary project. She is member of the Prospect Initiative and the German DFNS e.V.. Prof. Pogatzki-Zahn won a number of national and international research awards like the IASP Collaboration Research Award, the EFIC Grünenthal Grant (E-G-G) and the Clinical scholar research award of the IARS, among others. She is part of several academic boards including the executive committee of the German Pain Society, Council member of the IASP, chair of the SIG Acute Pain of the IASP, past chair of the Pain and Palliative working group of the European Society of Anaesthesiologists and Intensive Care among others. She was a member of many scientific program committees including those for the IASP Congresses in Yokohama (2017) and Boston (2019) and is Deputy Editor – in Chief of the European Journal of Anesthesiologists (EJA). She published more than 160 original peer reviewed manuscripts, 50 review articles/ editorials, 16 Book chapters and 3 books (h-Index: 35, Web of science).
