International Nurses Day is an annual event organised by the International Council of Nurses on May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. The day is marked by the production and distribution of nursing resources and evidence. The theme for the 2021 day is Nurses: A Voice to Lead – A vision for future healthcare.

Nurses play a pivotal role in pain management, not only in in-patient care, but also in outpatient and primary care. In many hospitals, pain services are nurse-led; nurses are members of interdisciplinary teams in the management of chronic pain, they contribute to and lead policy development and initiatives, and are involved in academic and clinical pain research. Pain Management is a growing speciality in nursing, with some variations in roles between countries. To access nursing resources and evidence related to International Nurses Day, please visit the website at or follow the day on Twitter with the hashtags #VoiceToLead and #IND2021

The European Pain Federation recognises the role played by nurses in pain management through our pain nursing curriculum offered through our European Diploma in Pain Nursing. The Diploma is endorsed by the European Specialist Nurses Organisation.
