ASM 2023 NEWS

The British Pain Society was in Glasgow for our 2023 Annual Scientific Meeting, featuring three days of insightful sessions from experts across multiple professional fields. Highlights included the BPS Lecture from Dr. Jonathan Hill, Professor of Physiotherapy at Keele University, and the Pat Wall Lecture from Dr. Kirsty Bannister, Associate Professor at King’s College London.

Recognizing some of the leading figures in pain, it was our privilege to posthumously award the Medal of Distinction to ex-President Dr. William Campbell, whose son collected the medal on his behalf. Honorary Membership was also awarded to the ‘Queen of Pain’ Professor Irene Tracey.

We were delighted to also hold a public outreach event at Glasgow Central Station, working with Pain Concern to highlight local and national support and guidance to individuals passing through the station. A lively, engaging, and thought-provoking event. We’ll soon be sharing more details on our 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting, we hope to see you there.

BPS AGM

The Annual Scientific Meeting is also the setting for the Society’s AGM, where Officers and Council Members are elected. Dr. Roger Knaggs takes on the President role from Dr Arun Bhaskar, who will remain on our Council as Immediate Past President for the next year. We’re very grateful for Dr Bhaskar’s contribution over a unique four years.

We’re delighted to confirm three Vice President: Dr. Ashish Gulve, Dr. Rajesh Munglani, Dr. Cathy Price. They will be well known to many BPS members, having contributed to the Society’s work over a number of years. Dr. Gulve becomes Vice President having served a success full term as Honorary Treasurer. We’re pleased to welcome Dr. Tacson Fernandez into this important role.

Having both completed successful terms, Dr. Ayman Eissa and Dr. Amelia Swift stepped down from the positions of Honorary Secretary and Council Member respectively. We’re thankful for their contribution and wish them all the best for their future endeavours.

Dr. Neil Collighan will step up to the Honorary Secretary position. A highly respected Pain Management specialist who has worked with the Society in several functions, we look forward to working with Dr. Collighan in his new role.

Finally, we are pleased to welcome new Council Members Dr. Mahindra Chincholkar and Dr. Manojit Sinha. Their expertise will be invaluable as we continue to work on behalf of those advancing the understanding and management of pain.

Over the coming months, we’ll be talking about some of the opportunities to contribute to the Society’s work through its Groups and Committees, and we encourage you to get involved.

  1. Guest participation of the SPS at the 7th SGAIM Spring Congress 2023

The SPS had the opportunity to participate as a guest society at the 7th SGAIM Spring Congress, Wednesday, 10. May 2023 – Friday, 12. May 2023. We offered a workshop, a lecture in the side program and a state of the art lecture in the main program. In addition, SPS had a booth in the exhibition hall. The General practitioners were interested and it was a good opportunity to raise awareness about chronic pain as a disease in its own right.
