Submission Model: Two-stage submission process (pre-proposals and full proposals)

Submission Deadline for Pre-Proposals: 18 February 2025, 14:00 CET

Budget: Over EUR 36,500,000

Aims / Objectives:

The EP PerMed Joint Transnational Call (JTC) 2025 focuses on advancing pharmacogenomic strategies for personalised medicine. This initiative aims to support innovative research that enhances the precision and effectiveness of medical treatments through pharmacogenomics, fostering new approaches to drug response prediction and personalised treatment pathways.

Research proposals should address at least one of the following areas:

  • Identification of new pharmacogenomic markers or signatures using (multi)-omics data in relation to drug or drug combinations.
  • Validation of pharmacogenomic markers or signatures to predict outcomes of drugs or drug combinations.
  • Utilisation of pharmaco-omics strategies to optimise dosages, efficacy, and/or reduce adverse drug responses and non-responses, paving the way for personalised treatment pathways.

The call encourages interdisciplinary collaboration, including pre-clinical and clinical research, bioinformatics, and ethical, legal, and societal aspects (ELSA), among others. A work package focusing on the implementation of research outcomes into clinical practice is mandatory.

Relevance to the pain community:

This call holds particular significance for the pain research community in Europe, as it provides a unique opportunity to harness pharmacogenomics to advance pain management. By identifying and validating biomarkers that predict individual responses to pain treatments, researchers can develop tailored therapies that improve efficacy and reduce adverse effects. The emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration allows for the integration of pain-specific expertise with cutting-edge genomic research, driving innovative solutions for personalised pain care. Ultimately, this initiative supports the development of more effective, patient-centered approaches, addressing the complex challenges of managing pain and improving quality of life for those affected.

Include EFIC as a partner in your research consortia/grant applications

Effective communication of results and societal/clinical impact are increasingly emphasised by research funding bodies. EFIC can help your research project achieve this and more through doing the following:

  • Communicate your research project results and updates via EFIC’s online communication channels – social media, mailing list, website
  • Produce and share video interviews about your research
  • Host open webinars on your research
  • Connect you to the programme organisers for our scientific meetings, where you may be offered the opportunity to showcase your research
  • Provide access to our database of 20,000 clinicians and researchers, including for survey participation.
  • Recruit subject matter experts through our ‘Pain Scientist Network’
  • Patient and public involvement; Involve = patients and other stakeholders in your research through our strong links with patients’ organisations and experience in lay-audience communication
  • Boost your network through engaging with our established connections with scientific societies, industry, patients’ organisations and policy makers.
