Dear Friends

Spring is in the air in most parts of Europe and I am looking forward to an exciting year ahead.  Brexit is looming large on the horizon with a lot of uncertainties as the UK Parliament is going through endless debates, but I see no such divisions in our world of pain medicine.  There are plenty of interesting meetings in the coming months including the 11th Congress of the European Pain Federation in Valencia, Spain in September.  I am outlining some of the other important events below and if I have missed out on something that is important, please do not hesitate to contact the EFIC Executive Office or me directly so that we can post future issues and use the various social media platforms to spread the message.

There had not been many meetings I attended this year so far.  The Seventh “Advances in Pain Medicine International Winter Symposium” hosted by the London Pain Forum happened in Tignes Le Lac, France; as usual the meeting brings together a group of pain clinicians who have a common interest in pain management as well as winter sports, thus making most of the best of Alpine conditions.  The meeting was opened by our own Prof Luis Garcia-Larrea, Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Pain with a superb presentation “From Nociception to Compassion: a journey through the Cortical Integration of Pain in Humans”.  There were several topics on neuromodulation “The Underworld of Sub-perception Spinal Cord Stimulation” (Dr Simon Thomson, UK) and “Advances in Peripheral Neuromodulation” (Dr Teo Gorozenuik, UK) and “Electrical Stimulation for Mechanical low back pain” (Dr Sarah Love-Jones) were some of them.  “Treatment of Neuropathic pain” (Dr William Hwang, USA) “Long-term management of Painful Diabetic Neuropathy” (Dr Ivanova-Stoilova, UK).  “Headache and Trigeminal Neuralgia” (Dr Vladimir Gorelov, UK) and “Treatment of Discogenic pain” (Dr Tony Hammond) and “Modic changes” (Dr Myelenbusch, The Netherlands) created some controversy, but interesting discussions.  “Innovations in Ultrasound techniques” and live demonstrations by Dr Athmaja Thottungal, UK was once again popular this year.  It was fascinating to listen to “Novel Focal Pain Intervention: Peripheral Nerve Field Stimulation by Micro-cautery” Dr Camilus Power (Ireland) and we discussed the need for more research into this field.

“Use of Medical Cannabis in Switzerland” Dr Christophe Perruchoud (Switzerland) “Legalisation of Cannabinoids in the UK” (Dr Arun Bhaskar) gave an overview of the changing landscape; we also teamed up and did another session on cancer pain management.  I am looking forward to the next edition in 2020.

I am attaching a list of meetings and courses below and I would give out the details of these in the upcoming issues. I look forward to seeing you at some of these meetings.

In addition to the below, you will find updates on various events and pain congresses in the EFIC meeting calendar here.
