We are deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Andrea Evers, who passed away on Monday, 4 August 2025. Since joining Leiden University in 2013, Andrea was a driving force in health psychology, forging strong bonds between research, education, and clinical practice. A recipient of the prestigious Stevin Award in 2019, she pioneered groundbreaking psychoneurobiological studies into placebo mechanisms and nocebo effects, and led the Interdisciplinary Placebo Research Center. Andrea also served as Secretary of the IASP Placebo SIG and President of SIPS, bringing global research communities together with compassion and clarity.
We at the European Pain Federation had the privilege of working closely with Andrea through the PANACEA project, on advancing To provide higher Education healthcare students and professionals with knowledge and competence about placebo and nocebo mechanisms. She also contributed to our congresses, most notably as a plenary speaker at the EFIC Congress 2022 in Dublin, where she participated in a plenary session on digitalised services in the management of pain and comorbidities.
Her legacy continues through her impactful science and the many lives she touched in pain research and patient care. She will be dearly missed.
