The European Pain Federation EFIC conducted Part 2 of the Exams for the European Diploma in Pain Medicine (EDPM) and the European Diploma in Pain Physiotherapy (EDPP) in Leuven, Belgium, in September 2024. The event marked a key milestone for healthcare professionals pursuing a specialisation in pain management and physiotherapy.

The exams took place over 3 intensive days, featuring structured clinical assessments and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs). The EDPM Part 2 assessed candidates’ clinical reasoning, patient management, and diagnostic skills, while the EDPP Part 2 covered clinical skills and patient case discussions in relation to pain physiotherapy. The examination panels consisted of leading experts from across Europe, ensuring standardised evaluations.

Candidates came from various countries, reflecting the growing international recognition of the diplomas. The event was well-received, with participants praising the organisation, the depth of the cases presented, and the opportunity to demonstrate their clinical expertise in a real-world setting. EFIC is delighted to announce 23 new EDPM and 10 new EDPP diplomates, with Johannes Riedmann winning the Louis Gifford Prize and Nick Kroning winning the Ulf Lindblom Prize as the highest scoring participants in the EDPP and EDPM exam respectively.

Johannes Riedmann on winning the Louis Gifford Prize: “Becoming a better pain therapist meant accepting that I don’t have all the answers and that many other experts possess knowledge far beyond my own. Letting go of ego opens the door to interactive learning from your colleagues, engaging in meaningful discussions, and building a network with experts all over the world. The European Pain Federation offers the ideal platform for such collaboration and growth through its pain diploma programs.”

Nick Koning on winning the Ulf Lindblom Prize: “Preparing for the EDPM exam according to the curriculum allows you to increase your knowledge across a broad range of topics in the field of Pain Medicine. The exam itself tests both knowledge and clinical skills by several of the experts from the field. For early-career pain physicians, sitting for the exam will improve your clinical practice. Winning the Ulf Lindblom prize is a great honour on top of this.”

The success of the exams reinforces EFIC’s commitment to advancing pain education and upholding high standards in pain care across Europe. The next round of the EDPM and EDPP Part 1 exams will take place on 15 November 2024 virtually. Find out more and register before 15 October 2024 here:
