About World Arthritis Day

Today is World Arthritis Day. Established initially by Arthritis and Rheumatism International in 1996, the Day aims to help raise awareness in all audiences across the world of the existence and impact of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, often referred to as RMDs. The debilitating effects of RMDs, of which more than 200 exist, are little known; their impact, however, is largely – and silently – felt. The slogan attached to this year’s Day is ‘It’s in Your Hands, Take Action’.

Pain is a prominent feature of many RMDs and is the source of much personal, financial, and societal burden. Pain is estimated to affect the lives of over 120 million people with RMDs of all ages in Europe alone. Appropriate medication (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis), physical activity, exercise, and lifestyle management are core treatments.

The European Pain Federation wishes to raise awareness and promote mental health through various projects and activities:

The EFIC Academy Education Platform includes extensive content on the assessment and treatment of arthritis for physicians, physiotherapists, nurses, and psychologists. Learners will be able to pursue self-directed learning or follow specific tracks relevant to needs. Access is limited to EFIC Academy members only.

Academy members get access to sessions such as:

The European Pain Federation’s On The Move campaign provides tips and resources to help get patients with pain more active and engaging in exercise (available in 11 languages).
