“My Why” – A Global Call to Action

October is recognised globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to promote early detection, support those affected, and advance research. The 2025 theme, My Why”, invites individuals—from patients and healthcare providers to researchers and supporters—to share their personal motivations for engaging in the fight against breast cancer.

Global Impact of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer worldwide and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. In 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) established the Global Breast Cancer Initiative (GBCI), aiming to reduce global breast cancer mortality by 2.5% annually, potentially saving 2.5 million lives by 2040.

The GBCI focuses on three key pillars:

  • Health promotion and early detection

  • Timely diagnosis

  • Comprehensive breast cancer management

These strategies are crucial in addressing the rising global burden of breast cancer, which is projected to increase by 38% in cases and 68% in deaths by 2050.

EFIC’s Role in Pain Management

While breast cancer awareness often focuses on early detection and treatment, EFIC emphasises the importance of addressing cancer-related pain. Pain affects up to 40% of survivors and at least 66% of patients with advanced progressive disease.

Initiatives include:

  • Societal Impact of Pain (SIP) – Advocates for improved pain management policies across Europe.

  • INTERACT-EUROPE – EU4Health-supported programme developing inter-specialty cancer training, including pain evaluation and management throughout the cancer journey.

Screening and Early Detection

The European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer (ECIBC) provides evidence-based, person-centred guidelines and a quality assurance scheme for breast cancer services. Recommendations include:

  • Mammography every two years for women aged 50–69

  • Optional start at age 45 and continue to age 74

In Switzerland, the PINK CUBE Roadshow raises awareness through personal consultations, free breast exams, and mammography information, targeting communities with limited access to screening.
