News from the European Pain Federation EFIC Chapters

Our annual one day conference for members with lectures on the theme of IASP Global year will be held in Stockholm on the 17^th of March.

Our annual Pain Congress will be held in Uppsala on the 12-13^th of October. The main theme of the meeting is Integrative Pain Medicine. The program includes lectures on how to integrate modern knowledge about pain in all areas of medicine and vice versa, how to integrate other medical subjects in pain care. Four cornerstones need to be included in such an integration: clinical work, research, education and last but most importantly, the patient. Different themes will be touched upon such as sleep and pain, emotions and pain, perioperative pain relief, translational research on nociplastic pain and many other exciting topics.

1. Guest participation of the SPS at the 7th SGAIM Spring Congress 2023

At the 7th SGAIM Spring Congress, Wednesday, 10. May 2023 – Friday, 12. May 2023, the SPS will participate as a guest society. This means the SPS will offer a workshop, a lecture in the side program and a state of the art lecture in the main program. In addition, SPS will have a booth in the exhibition hall.

2. SPS Annual Congress 2023

The French Pain society (SFETD) shares with you two important events for this first quarter of 2023:

PUBLICATION OF FRENCH RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE JOURNEY OF CHRONIC PAIN PATIENTS

After several months of work, the French National Authority for Health (Haute Autorité de santé), in collaboration with the College of General Medicine (Collège de médecine générale) and the French Society for the Study and Treatment of Pain (SFETD), has published a guide on the healthcare journey for chronic pain patients. The aim is to provide a graduated and tailored response to each person in order to improve their quality of life. The goal is to strengthen prevention, improve waiting times, and promote coordination among all actors involved in patient care. The journey places a preponderant emphasis on primary care medicine and its collaboration with chronic pain structures, as well as the appropriate mobilization of specialized hospital services. The level of healthcare is determined by the patient’s needs.

CONTRIBUTION OF SFETD TO THE SOCIETAL DEBATE ON END-OF-LIFE CARE IN FRANCE

Questions regarding the legislative frameworks that govern end-of-life care are being discussed in France. The SFETD is actively participating in the societal debate on end-of-life care in the country. As a learned society, SFETD is able to provide expertise in the area of pain and suffering relief, which are central issues in the ongoing discussions. SFETD has participated in visits organized by the French government, notably in Spain and Italy, to engage in collective reflection and draw inspiration from neighboring countries’ models.

• The British Pain Society’s 56th Annual Scientific Meeting will be held at the Technology and Innovation Centre, University of Strathclyde, in Glasgow between 9th and 11th May. The programme provides a variety of plenary and workshop sessions that will interest a multidisciplinary audience.  Key highlights include the Pat Wall lecture given by Professor Kirsty Bannister (The top down control of pain in health and disease: From bedside to bench) and the British Pain Society Lecture by Professor Jonathan Hill (How can we improve primary care management of MSK pain?)

The belgian pain society , BPS, organizes a young researcher day , as of last year we started doing this and it had a great success.

The year 2023 is the 27th year of activity of the association. The aim of the association’s activities is the multi-professional and multi-disciplinary development of pain research and treatment in Finland. The aim of the association is to influence questions and opinions on pain management in society. Cooperation with SIP Finland is an important task.

The association has 13 committees. In addition to this chapter, the Art Therapies Committee and the Neuromodulation Committee were formed this year. The committees plan and organize nationwide multi-professional pain management training courses for medical professionals. The training courses planned by the committees form the central focus of the association’s activities. Our next Finnish Pain Society Congress will be held at the end of April. We are also planning to better introduce our members to the EFIC organization and the opportunities it offers (Pain Academy, SIP, etc.).

The main goal of the activity is to increase interest in pain management and research in Finland. In autumn 2022, a member survey was sent to all members of the association. The member survey asked for members’ thoughts on the current activities of the association and hopes for the development of the association’s activities in the future. All the association’s key goals and areas of development for the 2023 operating period were defined based on a member survey. We aim to create internal structures of the association that support the achievement of the objectives of the operation. At the same time, we check whether the goals of the activity outside the association appear appropriate. 

The internal communication of the association is still under construction. The update of our website is a significant reform aimed at facilitating internal communication. In the 2023 operating period, the association’s renewed social media channels will also be available.The pain report appears again twice a year. In the 2023 operational period, Kipuviesti  (our pain journal) will start collaborating with EFIC so that selected articles from the European Journal of Pain will be published in Kipuviesti in Finnish. Current articles are published based on the recommendations of the committees in Kipuviesti.

Not much is known about the timing of the introduction of ICD 11 in Finland. In the 2023 budget draft of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, 1.4 million euros are earmarked for the nationwide introduction of the ICD-11 diagnostic classification.
